Proud owners and operators from 1989-present are Marty and Etanda Morelli and Beda Martin (Stan Martin 1989-2005).

In the 1800’s, Nanaimo, the “Black Diamond City” was a growing and prosperous area largely populated by coal miners and soon followed by merchants and other adventurers. From those early pioneers emerged one George Mitchell, who wisely perceived the need for a public house to provide hospitality to travelers and good fellowship for local inhabitants.

On June 10th, 1879 the ribbon was cut to open the Talbot Hotel, the original name of this building. Located near the Millstream River on Bowen Road and one quarter of the way to the mines at Wellington, this stage coach stop and “watering hole” became popularly known as the Quarterway.

Operating continuously for over one hundred and thirty years, it is said that its success is due to the comfortable and home like atmosphere found within.

The Quarterway has seen many alterations and changes in ownership over time but the memories of laughter, music, fun and camaraderie shared by the patrons past and present remains unchanged. It is still the place to meet and greet today!

The current management have strived to maintain the spirit of conviviality and hopes that you feel a continued sense of warmth and welcome.
